For the past few weeks we had been talking about doing a full-blown fishing adventure out to La Jolla on a SUP and haphazardly threw out the idea--the crazy idea--to tow surf behind a shark. "Is that even possible?" we thought, contemplating the stability and functionality of the board itself and whether we believed we could pull it off. We decided to go for it, Jared had it all thought through--except for one minor (read major) detail: what to do when a angry thresher shark its whirling around right beneath your feet?!
Jared launched around 8 o'clock in the morning, it was beautiful and the sun was shining. He made his way out to the kelp beds just off the point of La Jolla, and loaded the Hobie bait tanks with candy-bar-sized green back mackerel with hopes of catching a shark.
Meanwhile, Garrett and myself launched from the shores each on our own Mirage kayak. Garrett was in an Outback and I had an Oufitter tandem all to myself. In each boat we had rigged up the new Hobie Evolve Torqeedo motor which afforded us the luxury to sit back and cruise out to La Jolla going 5 mph with absolutely no effort.
This time we brought a new weapon concerning our arsenal of fishing equipment--a stand up paddle board. If your like us, you might have wondered whether it is possible to hook up and surf behind a big fish on one of these SUP boards. We sought this dream into a reality, and everything started to fall into place when we were able to get one of these beautiful sharks on the hook.
Below are a sequence of photos taken that best illustrate how this dramatic event took place. The whole process went great until we realized a live shark was literally circling right beneath our feet, and angry too! None of us had not quite imagined exactly what to do once Jared had the beast within arms reach of the board. Regardless, whatever actually happened was quite entertaining. No blood, just awesome photos.
